Health Information Management’s blends the sciences of holistic medicine and information technology that focuses on healthcare applied statistics, information resources, legislative rules and quality insuring to guarantee that the most up-to-date information is available to make informed decisions. Health Information professionals are key advocates for protecting the privacy and confidentiality of patient information and serve as the critical link between patients, physicians and insurance companies by managing health and wellness information in accordance with administrative, legal and ethical requirements. They are experts in the field of health records, quality assessment, patient information, health planning, reimbursement and medical research.
ASU’s HIM program will equip the student with the necessary information to succeed in the Health Information Management arena. Each student will have a solid foundation with courses in biology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, information systems/design, healthcare financial management, research methodology and quality assessment. Each student will explore the world of healthcare and develop entry-level proficiencies in the field through year-long clinical affiliations in health information management departments within the health and wellness center.
The mission of ASU’s Health Information Management (HIM) program is to assure that its graduates have achieved entry-level competencies in the development, dissemination, financial, technological and administrative skills needed for entry-level positions in a healthcare organization.
Students are eligible to apply for admission to the professional phase of the Health Information Management program after completion of all University core and required support courses. Applications for admission to the program with a formal interview will take place in the fall term of each year.
Admission criteria include the following:
- Completed University application.
- Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 based on a 4.0 scale.
- Completion of prerequisites and required support courses with the minimum grade of 2.5 or 75 percent.
- Completed application package including departmental application form, with three letters of recommendation from non-family members.
- Students will be required to participate in an oral and writing interview.
- Application and information will then be reviewed by the HIM Admission and Review Committee in the fall of the sophomore year for admission into the program in their junior year.
- Student will receive notification of admission to the professional component of the program in the fall term of the sophomore year.
